Responsive Projects looks at where design fits as a key element in our cultural, social, and economic ideologies. The first event invited renowned UK designer and activist Jonathan Barnbrook to discuss the theme ‘Citizen’. This event included a lecture/Q&A facilitated by Kevin Finn of Open Manifesto at The Edge as well as an extensive student workshop. A transcript of the event will be available for free download soon.The upcoming 2013 Responsive Projects Forum will feature influential British designer Ken Garland, with other speakers to be announced soon. The event will be held at the State Library of Queensland on Thursday April 11. Our response frames the issue in terms of Australian state politics. An LED sign (similar to those installed during roadworks) was programmed to display a succinct cost-benefit analysis that compares recent state budget cuts to the monumental cost of building an underground tunnel (with questionable benefits). We installed the sign in public, appropriating the same tools and language of government to question it's current short sighted priorities. As a result, there have been substantial funding cuts to its cultural and social sectors. Since coming to power earlier this year, the Liberal National Party has demonstrated that minority groups are no longer on the agenda. To deepen our understanding and develop our ideas, we undertook extensive research into public infrastructure spending, and other political decisions made by the party since coming into power. One of the first programs to be cut was Sisters Inside, a $120,000/year state-funded service providing counselling and support to female prisoners at the Townsville Correctional Centre, many of them indigenous. Designed for a comfortable reading interface, we drew upon legibility principles to create a site that utilises horizontal columns of text, minimising strain.Additionally, TGM's articles are often long-form and incorporate a range of media from photosets to video. This made it essential that we make the site user-friendly for the reader, while also being easy for the web producers at TGM to create and manage content. This led us to give considered thought to how the journalists themselves would be portrayed. To capture the personality of each writer, we briefed TGM photographer, Ella Rubeli to shoot in a documentary-style that caught the writer in their ‘natural environment’. Still in the beta stages, we’re working closely with TGM and Hunted Media to iron out teething issues as we receive reader feedback.
